All Roamiya eSIM plans support Personal Hotspot (also called tethering or WiFi sharing). That means you can connect your laptop, tablet, or a second phone to your Roamiya data connection just like you would at home. The feature works the same way it does with your regular SIM: you turn on the hotspot in your phone's settings, and nearby devices connect to it over WiFi.
Tethering does not change how your phone's data is measured. Every byte consumed by a connected device counts against your Roamiya plan allowance. The catch is that laptops and tablets tend to use more data than phones, often without you noticing.
| Activity on tethered device | Approximate data per hour |
|---|
| Web browsing (text-heavy sites) | 20-50 MB |
| Email with attachments | 30-60 MB |
| Video call (Zoom, Google Meet) | 500 MB - 1.5 GB |
| HD video streaming (Netflix, YouTube) | 1.5 - 3 GB |
| Cloud backup or large file download | 2+ GB |
| Software updates (OS or app updates) | 500 MB - 5 GB depending on update size |
A one-hour Zoom call from your hotel room can use as much data as an entire day of casual phone browsing. If you are working remotely during your trip, plan your data allowance accordingly. A 5 GB plan that lasts a week for phone-only use might only cover two or three full workdays of laptop tethering.
Running through these checks before departure prevents the most common tethering problems:
iPhone:
- Go to Settings, then Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- Set a WiFi password (at least 8 characters).
- On your laptop or tablet, find your iPhone's name in the WiFi network list and enter the password.
Android (Samsung, Pixel, and similar):
- Go to Settings, then Connections (or Network and Internet on Pixel).
- Tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- Turn on Mobile Hotspot.
- Configure the network name and password.
- Connect your other device to the hotspot network.
On both platforms, you can also connect via USB tethering, which is faster and does not drain your phone's battery as quickly as WiFi hotspot mode.
In most countries, Roamiya eSIM plans support tethering without restrictions. There are a few situations where you might run into issues:
- Some older Android phones from Chinese manufacturers disable hotspot when a secondary SIM is used for data. Check your phone's hotspot settings while still at home to confirm the option is available with the eSIM selected.
- If your phone is carrier-locked, the eSIM profile may not install at all. Verify your phone is unlocked before you buy. The locked vs. unlocked phones guide explains how to check.
- In rare cases, a specific network at your destination may block tethering at the carrier level. This is uncommon with Roamiya's partner networks, but if you experience it, try switching your phone to a different network by toggling Airplane Mode off and on.
If you plan to tether a laptop for work calls or remote tasks, consider a higher-data plan than you would for phone-only use. A 10 GB or 20 GB allowance gives you enough headroom for video calls, email, and web browsing over a week-long trip without watching the meter constantly.
