One of the most common concerns for first-time eSIM buyers is timing: if I buy a 7-day plan today, does the 7 days start immediately? The answer is no. Roamiya eSIM plans activate when your phone connects to a network at your destination, not when you complete the purchase or scan the QR code. This means you can buy and install your eSIM days or even weeks before your trip without losing a single day of validity.
The relationship between purchase, installation, and activation matters because it determines how much of your plan you actually get to use. Here is how the three stages work:
| Stage | What happens | Does the timer start? |
|---|
| Purchase | You receive a QR code by email after payment. | No. The QR code is just a delivery mechanism. |
| Installation | You scan the QR code and the eSIM profile loads onto your phone. The profile may show "No Service" if you are not at the destination yet. | No. Installation alone does not trigger activation. |
| Activation | Your phone connects to a local cellular network at your destination (e.g., SoftBank in Japan, Vodafone in Spain). | Yes. The validity countdown starts now. |
You buy a 3-day Spain eSIM on Wednesday. You install it on Thursday evening at home in London. Your phone shows "No Service" for the Roamiya profile because you are not in Spain. You fly to Barcelona on Friday evening. After landing, you turn off Airplane Mode and your phone connects to Movistar. The 3-day countdown starts Friday evening. Your plan expires Monday evening. You used all three days exactly on your trip.
You buy a 14-day Europe eSIM for a trip that starts in Paris and continues through Italy and the Netherlands. You install it at home three days before departure. When you land in Paris and your phone connects to Orange France, the 14-day timer begins. Traveling through Italy and the Netherlands does not reset the clock because regional plans activate once and cover all included countries for the full duration.
You are already in Thailand on a 7-day eSIM that is running low on data. You buy a second 5-day Thailand eSIM as a backup. You install it right away but do not switch your data line to the new profile. The second eSIM does not activate until you select it as your active data line and it connects to the Thai network. This means you can keep a spare profile loaded and ready without starting its validity prematurely.
Roamiya QR codes are usable for 3-6 months from the date of purchase. If you buy an eSIM and do not scan the QR code within that window, the code may expire and you would need to contact support for a replacement. For this reason, we recommend purchasing within 30 days of your trip unless your travel dates are firmly set further in advance.
If you bought an eSIM but never scanned the QR code, you are eligible for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. See the
Refund Policy for details. Once the QR code has been scanned and the profile installed, the eSIM is considered delivered and refunds follow the standard policy.
When selecting a plan, match the validity period to your actual trip length with a small buffer. If your trip is 6 days, a 7-day plan gives you a comfortable margin. A 10-day plan for a 6-day trip leaves unused days on the table, while a 5-day plan forces you to buy a second plan or go without data for the final day.
