PDP Authentication Failure on eSIM: What It Means and How to Fix It

Getting 'PDP Authentication Failure' or 'Could not activate cellular data network'? This error means your phone connected to a network but the data session was rejected. Here is how to resolve it.

You see "PDP Authentication Failure" or "Could Not Activate Cellular Data Network" on your phone. The eSIM is installed and you have signal bars, but data does not work. This error means your phone successfully found a network but the data session was rejected during authentication. In plain terms: the voice and SMS path works, but the data path is blocked.

PDP authentication failed: what it usually means

PDP (Packet Data Protocol) authentication is the step where your phone asks the carrier network for a data session and the network either accepts or rejects the request. A failure means the network rejected the data session. The three most common reasons:

Data roaming is off. The phone found the network but is not allowed to start a data session because roaming is disabled for the eSIM line. This is the most common cause.
Wrong network selected. Your phone connected to a carrier that is not a partner for your eSIM plan. That carrier rejects the data session because it has no agreement to serve your profile.
APN mismatch. The Access Point Name settings on the phone do not match what the partner carrier expects, so the data session fails at the authentication step.

Fix 1: Toggle data roaming

This resolves most PDP failures:

Go to Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks (Android).
Find Data Roaming for your Roamiya eSIM.
If it is OFF, turn it ON. If it is already ON, toggle it OFF, wait five seconds, then turn it back ON.
Wait 30 seconds for the data session to re-establish.

Fix 2: Restart the phone

A full restart clears the stuck PDP context and forces a fresh data session negotiation:

Power off completely (not just sleep).
Wait ten seconds.
Power back on.
Wait two minutes for the phone to reconnect and establish a new data session.

Fix 3: Manually select the partner network

If your phone auto-connected to a non-partner carrier, the data session will be rejected even though you see signal bars:

Go to Settings > Cellular > select your eSIM > Network Selection (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators (Android).
Turn Automatic OFF.
Wait for the network list to load (about 30 seconds).
Select the carrier name from your Roamiya confirmation email.
Once data starts working, you can turn Automatic back ON if you prefer.

Fix 4: Check data usage

If your plan has a fixed data allowance and you have used it all, the network will reject new data sessions. Check your current usage to rule this out:

If the error persists

If you have tried all four fixes and still see PDP Authentication Failure:

Try removing and re-adding the APN entry for the eSIM (Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network on iPhone, Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names on Android). Delete any custom APN and restart the phone so it picks up the carrier default.
Check for a pending OS update. Some Android versions had PDP-related bugs that were fixed in later patches.
